The first week of May, I am going to Rome in order to make sightseeing, but primarily because one of my friends joined the Pontifical Swiss Guard (guardia svizzera pontificia) and the swearing-in ceremony will take place on May, 6. I’m looking forward to attending such a historical event.

Rome’s history spans more than two and a half thousand years, since its legendary founding in 753 BC. Rome is one of the oldest continuously occupied cities in Europe. It is referred to as “The Eternal City”, a notion expressed by ancient Roman poets and writers. In the ancient world it was successively the capital city of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire, and is regarded as one of the birthplaces of Western civilization. Since the 1st century AD, Rome has been considered the seat of the Papacy and in the 8th century it became the capital of the Papal States, which lasted until 1870. In 1871 Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, and in 1946 that of the Italian Republic.

Famous artists and architects, such as Bramante, Bernini and Raphael, resided for some time in Rome, contributing to its Renaissance and Baroque architecture. (Wikipedia)

The history of the city leads to the fact that it offers a large variety of things to see. Buildings of various architectural eras, obelisks, sculptures, museums; the list goes on…

To spend the days I also took into consideration to take the Illuminati-Tour on my own. This is the route Robert Langdon followed in Dan Brown’s book „Angel & Demons“ and the film „Illuminati“ with Tom Hanks. The tour consists of 6 stations:

  1. Pantheon
  2. Santa Maria del Popolo
  3. Piazza San Pietro, St. Peter’s Basilica
  4. Santa Maria della Vittoria
  5. Piazza Navona, Berninis Fountain of the Four Rivers
  6. Castel Sant’ Angelo

What is more, the tour offers to visit more historic sites beside those six destinations. I believe the Illuminati-Tour would be great pleasure. On the other days my friend might show me around in Vatican City and show me other places worth looking into in more detail.
