San Diego is a major city in California, situated on the coast of the Pacific Ocean in Southern California and very close to the border of Mexico. With a population of more than 1.3 million, San Diego is the second-largest city in California and at the moment ranked on eight in the United States. The city is known as birthplace of California. San Diego was the first site visited by Europeans in 1542, setting the base for the settlement of Alta California centuries later.

Old Town San Diego (State Historic Park)

The Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is a state protected historical park in San Diego. It shows the early days of the town of San Diego and includes many historic buildings from the early 19th century (1820-70). As already mentioned above, this was the place the first European settlers arrived. Thus it is the birthplace of California. At the “Fiesta de Reyes” you can eat really nice Mexican food. Gaslamp Quarter

The Gaslamp Quarter is a state historic district in San Diego. It is the site of several entertainment and night life venues, as well as scheduled events and festivals. The Gaslamp Quarter extends from Broadway to Harbor Drive and from 4th to 6th Avenue, covering 16½ blocks. Most of the buildings were constructed during Victorian Era, and are still in use with active tenants including restaurants, shops and nightclubs. A really spectacular place to eat is the “Gaslamp Strip Club”. It is not a traditional strip club or cabaret as it sounds, but a famous steak place. Here you can order your steak, and then they will bring it raw to your table. You can grill it all by yourself following the BBQ guidelines, also including spicy rub and marinade.

USS Midway Museum

The USS Midway Museum (http://www.midway.com) is a maritime museum located in downtown San Diego at Navy Pier. The museum consists of the aircraft carrier Midway, which served last 1991 in the Gulf war. They show an extensive collection of aircraft, hangar deck, engine room, post office and the canteen.

Coast

Mission Beach

Mission Beach spans nearly two miles of ocean front. Close to the beach are several shops and the Belmont Park for amusement.

Ocean Beach and Sunset Cliffs

Ocean Beach (also known as O.B.) is a beachfront neighborhood of San Diego. Southward are the Sunset Cliffs, which are named after the sheer cliffs which border the ocean. The cliffside trails are popular for walking and for watching the sunset, but are undeveloped and therefore dangerous.

Oceanside

Oceanside is a coastal city located on California’s South Coast. It has a nice beach with big waves, where mid/end August the World Bodysurfing Championships take place.

Excessive Shopping

Downtown San Diego has a lot of famous brand stores, e.g. G-Star. If you want to excessive shopping, try the Las Americas Premium Outlets® in San Ysidro, just ½ mile away from the Mexican border.
